Vardenafil: the generic, and why men switch to it
Men usually arrive at vardenafil after sildenafil disappointed them or gave them headaches they could not live with. It works at lower doses, starts sooner and tolerates an ordinary meal better. One heart rhythm caution applies, explained below.

What the generic gives you
The same vardenafil in the same amount as the branded product. A licensed generic has to prove the body absorbs it equivalently before it reaches a shelf, and production runs under the same regulatory requirements.
Shape, colour and coating may differ. What reaches your bloodstream does not.
Why it costs less
No research programme to recover, no trials from scratch, no launch. The manufacturer uses a formula whose patent has lapsed. That saving lands in the price rather than in the quality.
How it compares with sildenafil
Onset is usualy twenty-five minutes to an hour, often quicker. The window is comparable, around four to five hours. Doses are smaller — ten milligrams of vardenafil is roughly the working equivalent of fifty of sildenafil.
And it copes better with food. A very fatty meal still delays it, but an ordinary dinner barely matters, which is a genuine day-to-day advantage.
The mechanism
Vardenafil inhibits PDE5. That enzyme ends an erection by breaking down the messenger that keeps the vessels in erectile tissue relaxed. Blocked enzyme, sustained erection — given arousal.
What dose is right?
Ten milligrams about an hour ahead as standard. Twenty if ten is not enough and was well tolerated. Five for men who react strongly, and as the opening dose past sixty-five or with liver problems.
One tablet in twenty-four hours.
The caution that comes with this molecule
Vardenafil prolongs the QT interval slightly — electrical conduction in the heart. For most men that is of no practical significance at all.
It matters if you take amiodarone, sotalol or quinidine, or have a diagnosed QT prolongation. Then sildenafil or tadalafil is the right choice instead. This is a selection criterion rather than a disclaimer, which is why it gets its own heading.
What are the side effects?
Headache, flushing, blocked nose, sometimes dizziness or a queasy stomach. Brief visual flicker or glare sensitivity can occur.
Sudden loss of vision or hearing on one side, chest pain, or a painful erection that will not resolve are all urgent.
What must never be taken alongside
Nitrate medicines — nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, molsidomine — plus riociguat and poppers. The two act on the same mechanism, and the combined drop in blood pressure can be fatal rather than merely unpleasant.
This is not a precaution that scales with dose. It applies to the smallest tablet as much as the largest, and it has no safe interval.
Other interactions
Alpha blockers for prostate symptoms are compatible with spacing and a low dose. Ritonavir and several antifungals raise vardenafil levels sharply, requiring a reduction. Grapefruit juice is best left out.
Who should avoid it
Men with recent heart attack or stroke, severe heart failure, very low blood pressure, severe liver impairment, or on dialysis. Inherited retinal disease rules it out.
Storage
Dry, room temperature, in the blister. Not the bathroom cabinet, not the glovebox.
