Sublingual means under the tongue

Not chewed, not swallowed with water. You place it under the tongue and let it dissolve. A portion of the sildenafil is absorbed straight through the mucous membrane into the bloodstream, skipping the first pass through the stomach.

That shortens the time to onset and makes the drug less dependent on what you have eaten. Those are the two reasons this format exists.

Do it right or you lose the benefit

Keep it under the tongue until it has gone. Do not drink for a few minutes afterwards. If you swallow it immediately with a glass of water it behaves like an ordinary tablet, and the point of buying this version disappears.

The taste is not wonderful. Most men find it tolerable for the time required.

How does the drug work?

Sildenafil inhibits PDE5. During arousal that enzyme would clear the messenger keeping vessels in erectile tissue relaxed, which is how an erection ends. Block it and the erection holds.

Arousal is still required. The faster route into the blood changes the timing, not the requirement.

Timing

Many men notice an effect within fifteen to twenty minutes. The window afterwards remains about four to five hours, as with any sildenafil product.

About the strength

Side effects can arrive faster

The same list as any sildenafil tablet: headache, flushing, blocked nose, heartburn, sometimes a blue cast to vision. Because absorption is quicker they can come on sooner and feel sharper, then clear just as promptly.

Sudden vision loss, one-sided hearing loss, chest pain, or an erection that persists painfully all need help the same hour.

One combination you cannot have

Nitrates. That covers nitroglycerin in any form, isosorbide mononitrate, molsidomine, riociguat, and poppers. Both substances widen vessels by the same route, and together the blood pressure fall can be severe enough to stop the circulation working.

No gap between doses makes it acceptable. Anyone prescribed nitrates for angina needs a different approach to erection problems, and a doctor is the right person to find it.

Other cautions

Alpha blockers for prostate symptoms need spacing and a reduced dose. Ritonavir, ketoconazole and erythromycin push levels up; rifampicin pulls them down. Grapefruit juice off the menu.

Avoid entirely with severe heart disease, recent heart attack or stroke, very low blood pressure, severe liver or kidney disease, or inherited retinal conditions.

How should you store it?

Sublingual tablets are more sensitive to humidity than coated ones. Keep them sealed and dry, out of the bathroom, and do not leave the pack in a hot car.
