The capsule is the whole idea

A conventional tablet has to disintegrate before any drug becomes available. A soft gelatin capsule holds the sildenafil in solution — the shell opens and the contents are ready immediately.

In practice that often means an onset inside fifteen to thirty minutes rather than the usual half hour to hour.

What is inside

How it works

Sildenafil inhibits PDE5, the enzyme that would clear away the messenger keeping vessels in erectile tissue open during arousal. Enzyme blocked, erection sustained.

What side effects should you expect?

Headache, flushing, blocked nose, heartburn. Faster absorption can make them a touch sharper at first, and they often clear sooner too.

A faint blue tinge to colours or sensitivity to bright light happens and is harmless. Sudden vision loss, hearing loss in one ear, chest pain, or a painful erection that will not go down are not harmless and need help the same hour.

What must never be taken alongside

Nitrate medicines — nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, molsidomine — plus riociguat and poppers. The two act on the same mechanism, and the combined drop in blood pressure can be fatal rather than merely unpleasant.

This is not a precaution that scales with dose. It applies to the smallest tablet as much as the largest, and it has no safe interval.

Which other drugs matter here?

Alpha blockers need spacing and a low dose. Ritonavir and some antifungals raise levels and require a reduction. Grapefruit juice off the list.

Not for you if

Severe heart disease, recent heart attack or stroke, markedly low blood pressure, severe liver or kidney impairment, inherited retinal disease.

Storage matters more with softgels

Heat is the enemy. Keep them at room temperature and dry, away from radiators and out of a car in summer. Capsules that have gone sticky or misshapen should be thrown away.
